UFC lightweight Jake Matthews demonstrates how to slice through butterfly guard into mount.

Aussie UFC Lightweight Jake Matthews and 4th degree BJJ black belt Carlos ‘Portuguese’ Vieira return for this week’s Technique of the Week.

Jake is a brown belt in BJJ, and is currently scheduled to headline the UFC 193 prelims against Akbarh Arreola in November. Carlos on the other hand, is a 4th degree black belt, not to mention 2x Pan-American champion, a 2005 Brazilian champion, and a 2x Pan-Pacific champion.

This week, Jake demonstrates how to bypass your opponent’s butterfly guard, for the much more preferred and dominant “full mount”. Pay close attention, as Jake explains the pitfalls of this technique and subtle tips for how maximize it’s effectiveness. Once you’re in mount, you’re free to work for a submission or punish your foe with strikes. This technique is great for MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Sambo.
